Tactical Vests
Tactical vests are what you see SWAT teams wearing. You will also see many airsoft players wearing these at games. One of the most popular manufacturers is Blackhawk Industries. Blackhawk vests are used by real SWAT teams. There are several other highly regarded manufacturers such as Eagle and Tactical Tailor. There are several downsides to tactical vests, first the cost. Expect to pay over $100 for the lowest end model (unless you buy either used or a cheap nylon knock-off), and possibly over $200. Another downside is that tactical vests tend to get hot on a warm day. No one plays in shorts and short sleeves, the extra layer over your torso really sucks on a hot summer day! The biggest bonus is for those use non-AR-15 based guns. For example, you can't store MP5 magazines in a standard LBV or LBE.
Most military units do not wear tactical vests, rather they wear LBV's or LBE's.
Load Bearing Vest
also known as a LBV
LBVs tend to be a little cheaper than tactical vests. For outdoor play they also tend to be more practical. LBVs are actually one of the most comfortable options. You can pick up a LBV at most military surplus stores new for under $100, used for less. You may also be interested in a higher-end model by a company such as Eagle or SOE.
Load Bearing Equipment
also known as a LBE
LBEs are you cheapest option, but also the least comfortable. Nearly every military surplus store will have some of these.
